Tricks To Help You Get Whiter Teeth

We took our oldest daughter to her first dentist appointment right after she turned four years old. Most pediatricians recommend a first checkup and cleaning at the age of three, and some doctors are recommending first visits even younger than that. We didn't really mean to wait until she was four; but a new baby, and a new job that didn't include dental insurance made it easy to delay that first visit.

I was so proud of my daughter when she had her exam. She was compliant and interested in the process. I wasn't so excited, however, when we received the results: she had seven cavities and it appeared as though three of them were bad enough to need silver caps.

For those of you who have yet to experience a disappointing first dentist visit, here are some things I've learned about children, teeth, and pediatric dentistry since then.

Using a bottle at night causes a condition called "bottle mouth." Usually the front teeth are discolored or decaying with this condition. Clean your child's (yes, even your baby's) teeth before bed at night. Breast milk alone will not cause bottle mouth, but breast milk combined with other sugars left on the teeth will lead to that condition.

Flossing is important. I knew that flossing was important for us as adults; but I was unaware that the American Dental Association recommends flossing your children's teeth as soon as they have two teeth close enough to touch. And that was the problem with my daughter's teeth: most of her cavities were between her molars where brushing was not going to help.

Fluoride really helps. You can begin using fluoridated toothpaste as soon as your child learns to spit after brushing. We made this into a fun bathtub game to practice taking a small drink, and spitting it out without swallowing. The incentive to learn this new skill was the promise of pink, bubble-gum-flavored toothpaste with a picture of Disney princesses on the bottle. Most tap water is fluoridated now, but if you and your family drink mostly bottled water, you may want to ask your dentist about other sources of fluoride.

Genes count. If you or your spouse have a history of cavities and other teeth problems, chances are really good that your child will, too. Of course, if you have a sweet tooth, the chances are high that your child has inherited that tendency, and excessive sweets do lead to tooth decay, as well. Other indicators of teeth problems might be thin enamel or teeth that grow really close together.

And while I was still reeling from shame that I had neglected or even somehow caused my daughter's tooth decay; and while I was still stunned by the sticker shock of fixing the problem teeth, the dentist brought out another piece of paper for me to sign.

This paper listed a number of "behavior management" techniques that I was allowing the dentist and his assistants to use on my child. And I was informed that neither my husband nor I would be allowed in the treatment room. The idea that someone else would be able to hold their hand over my child's mouth to stop her screaming; or that she might be forcibly restrained by Velcro ties; or that she might be strapped to a board to immobilize her, all without the presence of her parents went completely against our parenting philosophies.

Since then, I have learned that many pediatric dentists do not allow parents in the treatment room. They cite such reasons as the child may look to the parent to rescue him; that the child is more compliant without the presence of the parent; and that crying and screaming bothers the parent worse than the dentist, who is presumably used to it.

We found those reasons unacceptable. A parent should be working in conjunction with the medical or dental professional to gain cooperation from the child. And if any restraining needs to be done, I would want her dad or I to be the one involved, not a stranger.

So it is very important to ask questions of any prospective dentist, including the policy on allowing parents in the treatment room. Don't ever think just one pediatric dentist is the only choice, no matter how highly your play group moms have recommended this one. I called every pediatric dentist in the phone book, until I found one who actually encouraged parents to cooperate in their child's dental care in the treatment room.

That didn't make it easy, though. We had a total of five appointments. One was for X-rays and cleaning. Three were for pulpectomies and caps. If you are unfamiliar with these terms, that's a good thing.

A pulpectomy is a root canal for baby teeth. It is less extensive than a root canal for adults, but because children's teeth are so small, in a lot of cavities, the nerve must be deadened before they can fill it. And because children are prone to grinding their teeth, and the small size of children's teeth make it difficult for large fillings to remain in place, a silver cap is placed over the tooth. This cap, unlike a crown in an adult's tooth, does not need to be specially fitted. The cap will only be used for a few years until the tooth falls out.

Our last appointment was for one filling. But because of the memory of her previous appointments, this last one was the most difficult in gaining cooperation. Even nitrous oxide doesn't ensure complete relaxation. So if your dentist offers to do all the work at once under general anesthesia, my advice is to consider it. We didn't take that opportunity because it would have cost us quite a bit more. But you also don't want a child who dreads or actively hates going to the dentist. Regular dental visits will be a part of a good health regimen his whole life.

Several years ago I bought a new refrigerator. I ended up with a Sears Kenmore with the freezer on the bottom. While I like the layout of the refrigerator, I have been less than happy with Sears and their way of doing business. Here is my list of top 10 reasons not to buy an appliance from Sears.

#10) They charge a $50 delivery fee. I think it is over the top to charge a delivery fee on a high-ticket item such as this. Amazon waives their shipping fee on any purchase over $25, why should Sears charge $50 when I live right around the corner from them?

#9) Limited service/delivery days. Once you make your purchase, you want to have it immediately. But Sears only delivers or makes service calls on certain days of the week, depending upon where you live. Forgive me, but if I live right around the corner from your store, I shouldn't have to wait more than a couple of hours to have my product delivered. And if you live in a rural area, you can easily wait a week or more.

#8) Nine-hour service window. For either delivery or a service call, all Sears will give you is an nine-hour service window - as in the product will be delivered between 8AM and 5 PM. Who gives a nine-hour window anymore? Even the cable company no longer does this. I've got better things to do with my time than sit around with my thumb inserted rectally waiting for the time period in which Sears will grace me with its presence.

#7) Unprofessional delivery drivers. When they finally decided to deliver my refrigerator, they sent a damaged model. Now, I know these things happen. I don't expect perfection. But, I think it's criminal (notice a trend here?) that the Sears delivery people tried to talk me into keeping my damaged refrigerator, claiming that since the dent was in the back of the unit, no one would see it! Meanwhile, the dent was right where the processor was, meaning chances were good I would run into problems later on.

#6) Poorly trained representatives. When I finally did get a refrigerator that wasn't damaged, I was unable to get the ice machine hooked up because the setup man did not know how to connect my model. This is really unforgivable.

#5) Overpriced appliances. I needed a refrigerator as soon as possible, so I chose Sears because of its name brand and the proximity to my house. If I had the luxury of price-comparison shopping, there's no way I would have picked this brand. And the proximity turned out to be no bargain, either.

#4) Scores poorly in consumer satisfaction. According to consumer ratings on Yahoo, Sears scored just 2.5 stars out of 5 from 137 people across the country. This included numerous consumers who rated it just one star. My guess is they would have rated it lower if that was an option.

#3)$59 Service Fee. Your Sears appliance is going to break down and require service. Chances are, quite often. Sears recognized an opportunity to make money off of this fact and decided to charge a $59 service fee. This is on top of parts and labor and does not guarantee that they will even be able to fix the problem. If you are into price-gouging, Sears is the company to do it to you.

#2 Limited parts in truck.. OK, you've agreed to the outrageous service fee, you've been waiting all day for the service truck to arrive, the technician has diagnosed the problem… but your appliance still isn't fixed. Why? Because the part is not in the truck. And if there's no part, you have to go back on the list and wait for the next time service comes to your area and hope that they remember to put the part in the truck this time

#1) Countless Web sites devoted to poor service. It can't be a good sign when your product and service are so bad that ordinary people go out of their way to start up Web sites with the sole purpose of trashing your product. Put in the phrase "Sears Sucks" into Google and you come up with 430,000 hits. That's a lot of dissatisfied customers.

How do you find out what your audience is thinking when they want to find your site or content? Easy - you need to simply think like your target audience. Actually, that sounds easier than it may be. If your content or site is a local restaurant review site, it can be as simple as opening up your browser, go to Google.com or Yahoo.com and type in the words you would use to find local restaurant review sites. What if your site or content is a bit more complicate than this? There are a few ways you can accomplish this:

1. Survey - you can try out Survey Builder or SurveyMonkey
2. Questionnaire - two sites to check are My3Q.com and FreePollKit.com
3. Direct Email - If you have a membership list built into your site, you can access this to send out personalized emails to find out how they found your site to begin with. Try to stay away from sending an impersonal message out to all your members - it's best to pick a few at a time and really think your email through before sending.
4. Face-to-face - If you find your membership to be very local, you can arrange to telephone - first contact them by email to find out if they would be interested in having you "pick their brain" for a few minutes.

Some of the information you will want to garner is:

1. How did they happen upon your site?
2. If they found you via a search engine, what did they use for keywords?
3. If they found you another way, determine if others found your site in the same manner.

Once this information is gathered, you can then use it to help you create your keyword and tag list (we'll cover this in a future article).

The bottom line? The most important key to getting more people to your site or content is those who already frequent your site or content. They are your first most valuable resource!
